J. J. Guest works a freelance compositor and occasional animator, in the animation industry. He has worked on hundreds of television commercials. He also writes interactive fiction games (for which he has won competitions and been nominated for several awards) and has recently written and directed a short film. He also writes about himself in the third person, which is the first sign of megalomania. |

My short film The Visitation will be shown as part of a Hallowe'en-themed screening at DIME NOVEL SCREEN on Thursday November 1st. DIME NOVEL SCREEN is a monthly film night at the Sassoon Gallery in Peckham, London. The screening will be followed by a Q and A session. The Visitation is a twelve-minute humourous 'mockumentary' which asks the question "Where does reality end, and fantasy begin...?" It stars Paul Darrow (Blake's 7, Little Britain) Carole Hayman (Ladies of Letters) Tracy Bargate (28 Days Later) Sangeeta Sabharwal (Zee TV) Milo Connolly and Tommy Herbert. The film was premiered at the Star One Blake's 7 convention in Stockton on Tees. Further details can be found on the film page. |

To Hell in a Hamper for the Acorn Electron The 8-bit Acorn Electron was my first ever computer; I taught myself to program in BBC Basic and even wrote a few text adventure games, most of which I never finished! Now, Dave Edwards, Electron enthusuast and head of the Electron User Group has converted my game To Hell in a Hamper to run on the Electron, BBC B, B+ and Master 128. The game is due to be released with EUG #67, the latest issue of the online magazine for Electron users, in March, but a sneak preview of the review can be found at Acorn Electron World. The Electron port is a very faithful copy and Dave has done an amazing job of converting it to run on the 32k machine. Dave said: "I played the java version of it and, seeing as there were no rooms or maps, I thought it would be neat to put it onto the BBC/Elk as there's no adventure like it available for either. I have to say, as you can tell by the review, that I thought THIAH was terrific fun - very funny, and also a very good adventure for a complete beginner who might kind of think IF boring. It made me laugh out loud on many occasions!!" |

A new TADS 2 version of my Choose Your Own Adventure game Escape from the Crazy Place has been released! I began writing Escape from the Crazy Place twenty-three years ago to entertain my friends and siblings, and somehow I just never stopped. An HTML version went online about three years ago, but this new version includes a wealth of material not included in that version, including some entirely new pages. It is intended to be the definitive edition! More information can be found on the games page. Escape from the Crazy Place can be downloaded from the IF Archive. An announcement on rec.games.int.fiction (RGIF) was followed by this article on the Adventure Game magazine website Brass Lantern. |

The rather brilliant programmer Mark J. Tilford (a.k.a. Ralphmerridew) has created taf2inf, a Perl script that performs a simple ADRIFT to Inform conversion, and has used my game Goldilocks is a FOX! to demonstrate its power! The upshot of this is that a brand new, all bells and whistles version of the game is nearing completion. The conversion required a significant amount of hand-coding to complete, giving us the opportunity to make a lot of improvements to the game. It should be ready for beta-testing soon. | |||||||||||||||||||||
